1994 Philippine Internet Developments

These are some of our recorded developments in 1994 Philippine Internet History.

 

  1. In March 1994, De La Salle University is the first school to be connected via leased line to the wide area network of PLDT. Followed by Ateneo De Manila University.
  2. In March 29, 1994, at the University of San Carlos (USC), Talamban, Cebu, the Philippines was linked to the world via the Internet. It got connected to Sprintlink, which at the time was carrying the backbone for NSFNet.
  3. Portalinc (http://www.portalinc.com) is the first commercial service provider launched in the summer of 1994. It was using a proprietary online system with its own viewers (precursor to the browsers) email, etc. It offered information from daily newspapers (The Manila Times) to horoscopes, all the jokes, freeware, shareware, etc.
  4. Akda (http://www.nwlink.com/~ria/), first Philippine literary site went online. (September 1994)
  5. In August 1994, MosCom (http://www.moscom.com) becomes the first commercial ISP to provide true continuous TCP/IP-based connectivity, and the first Philippine company to be officially registered as an Internet provider. It is the first nationwide Philippine ISP since 1998, and now with 70+ points of presence (PoPs).
  6. Ron San Juan's Miss Saigon Page (http://www.clark.net/pub/rsjdfg/) went online in 1994. Its purpose is to provide the fans of Miss Saigon with information about the musical, particularly about the people - actors and actresses, producers, musical directors, etc. - who have worked to put together productions all over the world.
  7. Ria Roncales-Goodwin's AKDA (http://www.nwlink.com/~ria/) is the first Philippine literary website. It went online in September 1994.
